Introduction
We sometimes receive complaints about motion alerts being triggered even when the device hasn't actually moved to a different location. In most cases, this can be traced back to the device being installed in a boat. Due to the way the motion alert feature works, special consideration must be taken when installing the device in a boat. This article describes the cause for these incorrect motion alerts and how to prevent them.
Cause
When activating the Vibration feature from the Notification Settings menu in the app, what you're doing in reality is enabling a feature that causes the device to alert you when the built-in vibration sensor is triggered. "Motion" or "Movement" is, thus, in this case not necessarily considered to mean that the device has actually moved to a different location but rather that the mechanical vibration sensor has been triggered.
This may cause incorrect alerts to be sent when you've installed the device in a boat, since boats may rock back and forth when the boat is put to sea. Depending on how large your boat is and where the device is installed, the device's vibration sensor may be triggered by these movements.
Solution
Initially, try adjusting the device's placement in the boat to make it less prone to interpret the boat's movements as vibrations. If this is not a viable option, or if it doesn't improve the issue, please disable the vibration feature and instead rely on the geofence feature to receive alerts when the boat leaves its defined area. Since the geofence feature relies on GPS geolocation rather than physical movements, it will not produce incorrect alerts like the vibration sensor may do when the device is installed in a boat.
