We are sometimes asked if it is possible to install the device and then activate the data plan when a situation arises that requires tracking of the vehicle. This can, for example, be in the event of a theft. This is possible in practice, but it is not something we recommend for several reasons:
1. In order for you to be able to track your device, the device must generate a movement in order for it to go from "Activation ready" to "Activated", that is, get in touch with the GPS-satellites so you can see its position in the app. A problem with activating the data plan after a theft is that the device has either been detected and removed, has run out of battery and thus can not be activated or that the device is now indoors, which makes it difficult for the device to contact the satellites. This reduces the chance of it connecting when you activate the data plan.
2. By activating the data plan at a later date, you will lose the location history of the device. This means that when you activate the data plan, you can only see the current position of the device and not how it has moved after the theft. Our transmitters send out location data every two minutes, which means that it continuously updates its position and not only when you request it. If the device has been detected or is out of battery, it is beneficial to be able to see the last location it entered before it stopped reporting.
