Introduction
MaxiTracker has a built-in SIM card - a so called M2M (Machine 2 Machine) SIM card. This SIM card allows the device to connect to the mobile network and transmit its location data to our servers. The difference between an M2M SIM card and a "regular" SIM card is that the M2M SIM card is carrier free and is specifically designed for use in smart connected devices (also known as Internet of Things, IoT devices). Regular SIM cards are usually coded to work with only a single mobile carrier and are also designed to be used in smartphones and tablets rather than IoT devices.
In order for the SIM card - and thus the product - to work, you need to have an active data plan for the device - much like what's also needed on a cell phone. You sign up for the data plan through our website at a monthly fee of SEK 49 / €4.90. The fee is automatically billed to your credit card (Amex/Visa/Mastercard) once monthly until you cancel your data plan. There is, of course, no mandatory subscription time involved.
Why do I have to pay a fee?
The monthly subscription fee primarily covers the mobile data that is needed in order for the device to connect to the Internet and transmit its location data to you. The subscription fee is also needed to facilitate upkeep and maintenance of the various server-side systems that provide functionality to the product. In other words - you're not paying for access to the app, but rather for the device to connect and transmit data to the app. This is very similar to the way you pay for data usage on your regular cell phone.
Certain other devices on the market make use of Pay as you go SIM cards; this is not needed with the MaxiTracker.
Unlike other products, the MaxiTracker built in SIM card also allows it to work in all European countries since the SIM card supports roaming and is carrier free.
What carriers does the device use?
The MaxiTracker SIM card is carrier-free and is authorized to connect to any GSM cell tower in EU and Schengen countries.
Where is the SIM card located?
The SIM card is installed in the product during manufacturing and is not visible unless you disassemble the product.
Why can't I use my own SIM card?
MaxiTracker is a product that is designed to be simple and maintenance-free: for example, when you install your product for the first time you do not need to make any settings in order for the product to work. This is made possible by our various computer systems, such as the MDM platform Cisco Jasper, that automatically check the devices so that they always have the correct settings when they are first connected. Sometimes we also distribute new settings to the products to improve device performance or enable new functionality in our mobile apps, and thanks to our computer systems, we can broadcast new settings to tens of thousands of products at the touch of a button without affecting the user experience.
The systems also monitor the products in real time: for instance, a product that displays abnormal behavior is automatically reconfigured so that it begins to function normally again. The systems also handle the devices' connection to the mobile network and ensure that the product is always connected to the mobile network which gives the best signal strength where the device is located. If a mobile operator experiences a malfunction somewhere in their network, then the systems will ensure that your product changes operators if it has been connected to the operator that's experiencing operational disruptions.
All this is done automatically, 24 hours a day, completely in the background - without you having to lift a finger! In order for all of these systems and processes to work properly, the device must be equipped with the telematics SIM card that is fitted from the factory; without this we cannot control and communicate with the products, which means that the product will not work properly.
To summarize: this solution provides us with overall reliability, stability and security that unfortunately just cannot be achieved with manually controlled, user-configured products.
Never replace the built-in SIM card
Never replace the SIM card that is built-in/pre-installed in the product unless our customer service requests you to do so. If you are requested to replace the SIM card, which is very rare, it is important that you use the SIM card we send to you and that you follow the instructions we give you to replace the card and restart the product correctly.
Also, you should never discard the built-in SIM card without customer service requesting you to do so. We reserve the right to charge an administrative fee for sending out a new SIM card on the grounds that the built-in SIM card has been improperly discarded. If you have accidentally removed the built-in SIM card, immediately reinstall the SIM card, restart the product and contact customer services, after which it will start working normally again.
If you replace the built-in SIM card with another SIM card of your own, the product will not work as the product (like we mentioned earlier) needs to have contact with our servers and our telematics platform to work properly. This, again, is only possible with the built-in SIM card that is in the product when you buy it. If you have already replaced the built-in SIM card with another SIM card, immediately follow the instructions at the end of the previous paragraph to restore full functionality.
Never install the SIM card in another device
You should never attempt to insert the pre-installed SIM card into any other device, such as tablets, 3G routers or other IoT products; The SIM card is to be used only in the SweTrack device and is permanently deactivated if our platform detects that the SIM card has been installed in a different terminal than the SweTrack device.
Never perform unauthorized hardware modifications
You should never carry out unauthorized hardware modifications of any kind, such as replacing the SIM card or attempting to modify other components of the product as this will result in the hardware warranty being void - unless you have been explicitly requested to do such a modification, such as for troubleshooting or product development purposes.
